Our Inconsolable Secret

Oil Barrels in Umraniye

“the sense that in this universe we are treated as strangers, the longing to be acknowledged, to meet with some response, to bridge some chasm that yawns between us and reality, is part of our inconsolable secret.” C.S. Lewis

Which is all to say that when beauty leaps out at you from forgotten corner it’s all the more gratifying.

I spent a few hours in Yenik√∂y, Istanbul the other day. The sky was cloudless, the breeze was slight,  the spring sun was gentle and the car park attendant was full of smiles. I mentioned to him that working on the shores of the Bosphorus next to one of the most beautiful stretches of water in the world can’t be a bad thing and he smiled. It was probably a different story a few weeks ago in Istanbul’s notoriously cold damp March weather but he looked at one with the world.
